The premise of the game is to train Pokémon to help you earn the eight gym badges, and then defeat the Elite Four. You were also supposed to catch one of every kind of Pokémon to fill up your PokéDex. There were only around 150 Pokémon in the games I remember, yet there are more than that here. So it's pretty weird!
As a breeder you just breed Pokémon! It's kind of nice to get a Pokémon from an egg that was bred, since they can sometimes have a wide variety of moves when they hatch that they wouldn't have had before... I don't know much about Pokémon breeding, but you can always contact the Breeding Centre with questions!
If you don't like being a breeder though, you can change your affiliation to a trainer instead by going to a Pokémon Centre and asking them to switch it for you.
